Born in Calcutta on June 30, 1959, Banerji's artistic journey began with a B.F.A. in painting at the College of Art, New Delhi, in 1980, under the guidance of acclaimed printmaker Anupam Sud. He later pursued an M.F.A. in printmaking at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 1985. Influenced by the tribal movement in West Bengal, his work shifted towards social issues, leading to the spiritual series 'Purusha and Prakriti.'
